Prevent Burnout in Your Homeschool

momburnoutBurnout is a common occurrence for parents who home educate because we tend to take on so much, are the full-time care takers of our children in addition to all other responsibilities already in place and especially when it’s carried out in a “schoolish” fashion by recreating the school model in the home.

The number one reason for burnout is fatigue. First and foremost you have to take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself enables you to care of others. This is something you can control, even in the most strenuous circumstances. Getting enough rest and caring for your self will make everything 90% more possible.

Number two reason for burnout as a home educator  is creating a full-time teaching job  on top of all the demands of everyday living. When we create an artificial learning environment in our home we are on the fast track to burnout. Standing in front of your children, teaching lessons and handing out assignments is not how learning happens naturally. When you align with the natural laws and work with the flow you eliminate most of your struggle and stress. Here’s a few steps you can take now to implement burnout prevention in your homeschool.

  • Instead of teaching, mentor by providing, guiding and then step aside. Be sure you’re providing your child with the tools to support self-education, guide him in the way he should go and then step aside allowing the child to do the work in the way that is best for him.
  • While the child is working on his self-education you will be modeling by doing your own reading or writing. Being conscious of what you’re modeling to your children can make all the difference in the world. If you’re busy running around the house cleaning, changing laundry or talking on the phone, don’t expect your children to be sitting and doing their work. It’s an invitation for them to get up and be distracted. When you sit then they can sit.
  • Create a parent partnership with your children rather than ruling over them. When you choose to walk beside them as a partner you’re truly supporting them along the path as they grow and learn. What they are going through is normal and part of being a living and ever-evolving human. A child must be honored as they go through the different stages of childhood and when you fully support them they are enabled to move forward in greatness.
  • Stop entertaining the children. You don’t need to line up work for them to do each day or activities to entertain. When you set up your home for a lifestyle of learning, give them the space and time to do their own thing, this is where they can really grow their genius.
  • Get guidance and help from a trusted mentor. This eliminates the guess work and saves you from repeating common mistakes that can lead you off path. It doesn’t have to cost much. Choose getting guidance by reading books by experts, reading blogs like this, joining membership programs or getting personalized coaching. You’d be surprised how quickly you can get on the road to greatness with a little help that will last for many years to come.
  • You don’t have to do it all yourself and let me tell you, you can’t do it all alone. No one does. Be sure and get help. The sooner we admit this to ourselves, the better. Review what’s on your plate. What can you hand over to someone else? Can you get help from a part-time or full-time housekeeper, nanny, and personal assistant or can your husband or older children take on some tasks to lighten our load?

This is the greatest and most honorable work you can do to make the world a better place today as well as for the future by raising your children and homeschooling. At times it can be hard and require more from you than you ever thought possible. Let me assure you, it is a thousand times worth the challenges and work. Be encouraged and stay inspired.
